La conception d’une identité visuelle est l’un des domaine les plus excitants du design graphique. Il s’agit de tenter, par le biais d’éléments graphiques utilisables sur les différents supports visuels disponibles pour la marque, d’installer une image mentale véhiculant ses valeurs dans l’inconscient des personnes qui lui seront confrontées, de sorte que plus tard leur cerveau connecte en étant à nouveau confronté à des éléments de communication la marque et ses valeurs.

Le logotype — s’il existe, car il n’est pas toujours indispensable — doit quant à lui s’inscrire comme un signe en contrepoint du système d’identification visuelle, et ne surtout pas supporter à lui seul ou presque tout le poids de l’identité de marque. Formes, matières, couleurs, surtout leur agencement constituent des éléments plus complexes, plus subtils mais plus constructifs pour arriver à réaliser cette image mentale. Il doit par ailleurs être utilisable en toutes tailles, notamment être lisible en très petit, et en une seule couleur pour conserver son efficacité dans des conditions visuelles difficiles. C’est pourquoi le logotype doit toujours être travaillé en monochrome.

Enfin, une identité visuelle comme un logotype ne devraient jamais être le fruit de quelques jours ou semaines de travail. Voués à être pérennes contrairement aux éléments graphiques d’une communication temporaire, ils doivent résister aux moments de recul si nécessaires pour en découvrir les défauts, l’idéal étant de travailler, oublier, retravailler, oublier à nouveau et finaliser sur plusieurs mois.
